A Leader Focused on Economic Growth and Rural Empowerment

Clayton brings a unique blend of strategic leadership, hands-on public service, and a deep commitment to strengthening communities. He currently serves as president and CEO of the Madison County Chamber in Anderson, Indiana. Since 2020, he has guided strategic initiatives that helped expand economic development, strengthen advocacy efforts, and foster collaboration across the county. Under his leadership, Madison County advanced major communitywide efforts, including participation in the Stellar Pathways program and the Rural Empowerment and Development Initiative, both designed to uplift rural regions and create long-term economic vitality.

Those accomplishments resonated strongly with Chamber leaders here in Union County.

“Clayton is a strategic, big-picture thinker with a passion for advocating for businesses of all sizes,” said Shane Fraser, chair of the Union County Chamber Board. “He brings a wealth of experience and demonstrated throughout the interview process that he has the vision and focus to elevate our Chamber and advance our mission of advocating for our members and community.”

Whitson’s leadership in Madison County earned statewide recognition as well. The Madison County Chamber was named Indiana Chamber of the Year (2024), and he was honored as Indiana Chamber Executive of the Year (2023).

A Strong Foundation in Public Service and Community Stewardship

Beyond his chamber leadership, Whitson has served multiple terms on the Madison County Council. While on Council, he managed a $38 million budget and chaired the county’s Capital Projects Committee. His work contributed to major community improvements; a new P25 public safety radio system, construction of a public safety complex, and completion of a federally funded bridge project.

He has also been an active voice in economic development efforts, serving on the Elwood Economic Development Commission and the Ivy Tech Anderson Campus Board of Trustees, among other roles. Earlier in his career, Whitson worked for nearly eight years as a firefighter for the City of Elwood.

These wide-ranging roles reflect a leader who understands growth from multiple angles: economic, civic, public safety, and community partnership.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Clayton as the next leader of our Chamber,” said Fred Edwards, chair of the Search Committee. “His proven track record, collaborative leadership style, and commitment to building strong, successful organizations make him the right person to guide us into the future.”

A Commitment to Listening, Learning, and Showing Up

Whitson shared that his first priority is building relationships one conversation at a time.

“Building strong relationships is essential to our success,” he said. “I’m eager to meet as many members as possible in the weeks and months ahead.”

His focus on listening exemplifies his leadership philosophy.

“I’m incredibly honored to step into the role of President and CEO of the Union County Chamber,” Whitson shared. “My commitment to advocating for all businesses and my passion for chamber work have prepared me for this opportunity. The Chamber plays a critical role in supporting both the business community and the broader Union County region. I’m excited to partner with the board, members, volunteers, and staff to strengthen the organization, champion local businesses, and promote continued growth and prosperity. On a personal note, my wife and I are equally excited to relocate to this beautiful area and make North Carolina our new home.”

The search process was supported by Anissa Starnes, IOM, Chief Impact Officer at YGM, LLC, and a volunteer committee of Chamber leaders.

Whitson succeeds Pat Kahle, who retired earlier this year after 11 years of dedicated service and transformational leadership.
