Union County Chamber President Pat Kahle, Board Chair Shane Fraser, Executive Committee members Fred Edwards and Clint Lawrence were on hand to surprise Helen Thomas, the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Recipient. An independent committee reviews all the nominations, and votes on the award recipients.
In a time when long-term dedication to a single company is rare, Helen Thomas stands out as an inspiring example. Helen spent 36 years in banking entirely in Union County, beginning with Heritage Federal Savings & Loan in Monroe. Her career continued under First Citizens Bank after it acquired Heritage in 1990. Helen’s rise from branch manager to overseeing multiple branches across Union, Cabarrus, Stanly, and East Charlotte, demonstrates her impact and leadership.
Helen’s colleagues attest to her gift for leadership and mentorship. Amanda Cameron, a Business Banker at First Citizens Bank, recalls Helen’s profound influence on her own career, describing her as a mentor who consistently nudged her toward new challenges and growth. “Throughout my career, Helen was instrumental in my professional and personal development,” says Amanda. “She encouraged me to take on new challenges and provided opportunities to serve our local community. Helen is one of the most impactful people I know in Union County.”
Helen’s commitment to her community has always extended beyond her professional life. Helen has served actively at First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, where her husband, Sammy, has been a pastor for over four decades. Both served in the Worship and Fine Arts Ministry of the church, Helen singing at many weddings, funerals, and other special occasions, touching many lives through her music.
Over the years, Helen has served on boards and held leadership roles in numerous organizations, including:
- » The United Way of Central Carolinas
- » Monroe-Union Breakfast Rotary Club
- » Monroe-Union County CDC
- » HealthQuest of Union County
- » Union County Chamber of Commerce
- » Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry
- » Atrium Union and Union West Advisory Board
Throughout her career, Helen’s leadership and excellence have earned her the respect and trust of her peers. She is a graduate of Leadership Union and the NC School of Banking, and in 2009, she was a key leader on a team that won the prestigious President’s Award at First Citizens Bank—presented to just one team nationwide each year.
Helen will be honored along with the other Excellence in Business finalists and recipients at the Annual Awards Gala on December 5, 2025.
